Candidates must apply online, through their RCEM account to book the MRCEM SBA examinations. All relevant dates, such as application opening, and closing are available on the RCEM website. Late applications are not accepted.
All parts of the RCEM examination, including MRCEM SBA, may be taken up to six times for a candidate to clear it. An additional attempt may be granted upon request by the examinee, subject to RCEM guidelines
Yes. As per RCEM guidelines, candidates may take up to seven years to complete all parts of the MRCEM examination.
Candidates can withdraw, defer, or cancel an exam booking before the application window closes through the appropriate form online. If an exam slot has not been booked, no intimation is required. And there are no provision for refunds as per the RCEM cancellation policy.

Whereas the MRCEM Primary is a single paper three hours long, the MRCEM SBA is a theory examination that takes four hours. This paper is written over two sessions, both two hours long, with a break of one hour between them. The entire paper is on the subject of ‘Understanding of the full range of conditions and presentation that may be encountered in the ED’. In total, the two sessions are 180 Multiple Choice, Single Best Answer (SBA) Questions.
Like the Primary examination, MRCEM SBA tests are also conducted twice a year, normally in January and September diets. As such, candidates can only apply for the September diet in 2026. The dates for this diet are:

The MRCEM SBA exams are also given through the computerized exam partners Surpass Assessments. Once a candidate has cleared the primary, they can book the MRCEM SBA as and when the Exam Booking is open.
