What is MRCEM?

The MRCEM is a prestigious postgraduate certification from the Royal College of Emergency Medicine — the sole regulatory body for Emergency Medicine practitioners in the UK, making it a global gold standard.

The exam has three parts: MRCEM Primary, MRCEM SBA, and MRCEM OSCE, testing both theoretical knowledge and applied clinical skills

Eligibility

To sit the MRCEM OSCE, candidates must

  • Have a current full medical registration with a license to practice
  • Have 6 months FTE Emergency Medicine experience above Foundation training or equivalent (post-full registration experience)

Number of Attempts

RCEM regulations state that candidates may attempt all modules of MRCEM, Primary, SBA, and OSCE, a maximum of six times. Those who’ve already completed the allowed number of attempts may apply for one additional attempt per module, subject to the guidelines of Royal College of Emergency Medicine.

Exam Structure

The MRCEM Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a clinical practical exam that truly tests the applied clinical skills of candidates.

It presents 16 stations of real-life clinical scenarios to the participants to assess their clinical management, and pip communication skills.

The exam takes place over 2 hours, 42 minutes with each station allotted 8 minutes, a minute per station as reading time,  as well as two rest stations.

Upcoming Exams

MRCEM Primary: 27 October 2026 (Test Centres Worldwide)

MRCEM SBA: 16 September 2026 (Test Centres Worldwide)

MRCEM OSCE: 24 July 2026 (Chennai, India)

While the first two modules of MRCEM, Primary and SBA, are conducted in collaboration with Surpass Assessment in their test centres around the globe, MRCEM OSCE tests are conducted in select locations.

Regardless of the module you are attempting, it is recommended that you book your examination slot as early as possible since the demand and availability of seats may vary.
