The MRCEM exam is given in three parts.
MRCEM Primary: The MRCEM Primary is a three hour long theory exam based on the RCEM Basic Sciences Curriculum.
The exam consists of 180 multiple choice questions with Single Best Answers (SBA)
MRCEM SBA: Like the Primary, MRCEM SBA is also a theory examination, but split into two sessions taking over 4 hours with a one-hour break between them.
Both sessions will be based on ‘Understanding of the full range of conditions and presentation that may be encountered in the ED’ with 180 MCQ SBAs in total.
MRCEM OSCE: The MRCEM Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a clinical practical exam that truly tests the applied clinical skills of candidates.
It presents 16 stations of real-life clinical scenarios to the participants to assess their clinical management, and pip communication skills.
The exam takes place over 2 hours, 42 minutes with each station allotted 8 minutes, a minute per station as reading time, as well as two rest stations.
MRCEM Primary: 27 October 2026 (Test Centres Worldwide)
