MRCEM intermediate SBA is the bridge between the foundational MRCEM Primary and final OSCE in the MRCEM exam pathway. Candidates must have cleared MRCEM Primary and have two years of medical experience post primary medical degree in order to be eligible to take the MRCEM SBA exam. The exam is computer-based, and it tests how well candidates can apply their clinical knowledge in real-life emergency scenarios.

Exam format
The exam consists of two papers. Each paper includes 90 Single Best Answer (SBA) questions and lasts for two hours. So, the full exam takes about four hours. There will be a one-hour break in between. It is conducted in English and delivered through Pearson VUE test centres worldwide. All questions are mapped to the 2021 Emergency Medicine Curriculum, specifically the Specialty Learning Outcomes (SLOs) for training years 1 to 3.
MRCEM SBA: Exam syllabus

SLO 1: Complex stable patient – 60 questions
SLO 3: Resuscitate, ACCS LO8 organ failure (excluding major trauma) – 40 questions
SLO 4: Injured patient – 30 questions
SLO 5: Paediatric Emergency Medicine – 25 questions
SLO 6: Procedural skills (ACCS), ACCS LO7 basic anaesthetic care – 10 questions
SLO 7: Complex or challenging situations – 15 questions
