The Royal College of Emergency Medicine stipulates limited attempts for each part of the MRCEM exam. 

For the MRCEM Primary, this is a maximum of six times, with an additional attempt granted on request, subject to the guidelines of RCEM. 

No. MRCEM is a coveted PG certificate in Emergency Medicine which is successfully completed only when a candidate clears all three parts, MRCEM Primary, SBA, and OSCE. There are no completion certificates granted for completing parts of the exam.

No. Repeat candidates need not apply again as all subsequent attempts for any parts of the exam are made through the same RCEM online account.

No. The MRCEM Primary examination is conducted in collaboration with Surpass Assessments in their test centres around the globe. Candidates take the MRCEM Primary exam in Surpass Assessment’s modern exam facilities via online invigilation. 

  • Candidates can cancel or defer an exam booking through the forms provided on the RCEM website. 
  • If no exam slot has been booked, they need not complete this procedure.
  • No refunds are issued for any of the MRCEM theory exams after an application has been submitted. 

What is MRCEM?

The MRCEM is a prestigious postgraduate certification from the Royal College of Emergency Medicine — the sole regulatory body for Emergency Medicine practitioners in the UK, making it a global gold standard. 

The exam has three parts: MRCEM Primary, MRCEM SBA, and MRCEM OSCE, testing both theoretical knowledge and applied clinical skills

Eligibility

To be eligible to attempt the MRCEM Primary examination, participants must hold a Primary Medical Qualification (PMQ) valid with the UK GMC. This is an MBBS, or an equivalent medical degree attained from an institution listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. 

No further training or experience is a requisite for sitting the MRCEM Primary exam.

Exam Structure

The MRCEM Primary is a theory exam given over three hours. This paper is based in the ‘Basic Sciences’ curriculum of the Royal Colleges of Emergency Medicine. 

The paper tests the examinees with 180 multiple choice questions (MCQ). Candidates are to choose the Single Best Answers (SBA) for these questions.

Upcoming Exams

The Royal Colleges of Emergency Medicine often conducts the MRCEM Primary over two diets each year, in the months of April and October respectively. 

Only the October diet of the MRCEM Primary remains in the year 2026. The relevant dates for this diet are as follows. 

Exam Date: 27 October, 2026

Application Deadline: 22 July, 2026

Locations: Test Centres Worldwide

 

Booking Guidelines

All candidates are allowed six attempts to clear the MRCEM Primary. 

The MRCEM Primary examinations are conducted through Surpass Assessments in their test centres worldwide. Candidates can also book their examination through Surpass Assessment.

  • First time candidates have to register an account on the RCEM website to apply for and book the MRCEM  Primary exam. 
  • Repeat candidates should use their previously registered RCEM account. 
  • All applications for the MRCEM Primary are reviewed as per the eligibility criteria
  • Once accepted, candidates will receive a mail from Surpass Assessments for the Exam Booking. 

Although Surpass Assessments has many computerized test centres around the world, seat allocation is dependent on demand, availability, etc. Due to this, candidates are advised to book a convenient slot and location well in advance.
