Eligibility of the Exam
Candidates require no previous experience in emergency medicine to appear for MRCEM primary exam. However, candidates should hold a medical qualification certified by the General Medical Council (GMC) for registering with the RCEM.
Exam Structure
The MRCEM Primary Exam is a written exam that consists of 180 single-best-answer multiple-choice questions (MCQs). Questions divided into three papers; exam is usually completed in a single day.
Additionally, the exam tests the candidate’s knowledge and understanding of the core curriculum for emergency medicine, and their ability to apply this knowledge to the diagnosis and management of emergency medical conditions. The exam is set at the level of a doctor who has completed two years of postgraduate training in emergency medicine.
