MRCEM OSCE Exam Explained

OSCE is an acronym for Objective Structure Clinical Examination. Besides, your clinical skills will be tested while you examine a patient in front of an examiner. Moreover, this will be either done live or via video conference. Along with your clinical knowledge, your communication skills will also be evaluated.

The OSCE exam consists of 16 stations in total. Each station will have 8 minutes of time. You will be further allowed 1 minute duration before each station to read the case scenario.

In addition, OSCE assesses the regular competences and clinical competencies needed to manage adult and paediatric emergencies. Paediatric expectation further involves managing a seriously ill and injured child or common childhood emergencies.

Eligibility For MRCEM OSCE Exam

One needs to fulfill all the following criteria to be eligible to sit the exam.

The candidate must have a valid or current medical registration approved by GMC to register for the exam. In addition, the candidate should complete the UK foundation programme or equivalent. FY1 is house surgeonship/internship. FY2 is the next year of training.

The candidate should pass the FRCEM primary or MRCEM Part A. In addition, the candidate must clear the FRCEM Intermediate SAQ or MRCEM Part B or MRCEM Intermediate SBA.

Lastly, the candidate must possess 24 months experience post FY1. The duration of FY1 is 12 months. Along with this a minimum of additional 6 months of Emergency medicine out of the next 24 months is mandatory.

MRCEM OSCE Exam 2024 Schedule

The MRCEM OSCE Exam will be held thrice in 2024. First exam is scheduled from 22 January to 02 February in London. The application window was between 18 to 25 Oct 2023. The results can be expected by 13 March 2024.

Second exam is slated to happen from 3 to 14 June 2024 in London. The application window is between 18 to 25 March 2024. The results will be out by 24 July 2024.

The third and last exam will take place again in London from 2 to 13 Dec 2024. The application window for this exam will be open from 28 Aug to 4 Sep 2024. The date of the results is yet to be confirmed.

MRCEM OSCE Exam Schedule

The dates and application for MRCEM 2024 exams are currently available on the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) website. Note that the time of opening for all exams is 10.00 UK time and application windows remain open for seven days. Besides, the closing time is 17.00 UK time on the closing dates. Lastly, the MRCEM OSCE Exam is scheduled to take place three times in 2024.

The MRCEM OSCE Exam Dates For The First

The first MRCEM OSCE exam will be held at London from 22 January to 02 February 2024. Furthermore, applications for this exam are accepted from 18 October 2023 to 25 October 2023. Lastly, the result of this particular exam will be out on 13 March 2024.

The MRCEM OSCE Exam Dates For The Second

The second MRCEM OSCE exam is supposed to be held from 03 to 14 June. The venue will be London. Besides, applications for this exam will be accepted from 18 March 2024 to 25 March 2024. The result of this exam will be out by 24 July 2024.

The MRCEM OSCE Exam Dates For The Third

The third exam will be held in London from 02 to 13 December 2024. Moreover, applications for this exam will be accepted from 28 August 2024 to 04 September 2024. The date for the results is yet to be confirmed.

Eligibility For the Exam

Candidates who have passed the MRCEM Primary and MRCEM Intermediate SBA or equivalent can sit the MRCEM OSCE exam. In addition, candidates should have at least 24 months experience after qualification and at least 6 months of experience in Emergency Medicine post Foundation year 1 or intern level.

The examination is conducted in English. Moreover, candidates are advised that IELTS Level 7 is the expected standard for completion of MRCEM examinations.

Exam Booking

Candidates must apply for the exam online during the published application window. Applications will open at 10:00 AM on the morning of the application opening date listed on the exam calendar. It closes automatically at 5:00 pm (UK time) on the listed closing date. Lastly, applications must be completed before 5:00 pm on the closing date. Late applications will not be accepted.

Location Of Exams

The MRCEM OSCE is delivered in London (UK), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Kochi (India).

Exam Structure

The MRCEM OSCE consists of 16 8-minute stations with one minute reading time between stations. There are also two rest stations in the exam.

Exam Results

The results for the MRCEM OSCE will be published around six weeks after the date of the examination. Results will be released to the candidate’s college website accounts. Result letters can be downloaded from the website on demand. Exam results will not be issued or confirmed by telephone or email.

The price of MRCEM (OSCE) Objective Structured Clinical Examination is around 450 pounds in the UK, 650 pounds in India and 750 pounds in Malaysia.

How to Prepare for the Exam

MRCEM OSCE is all about practical assessment and clinical examination. Moreover, the best possible preparation is lots of practice. Besides, picking up physical signs is important. In addition, find consultants within your hospital who are OSCE examiners or registrars who have passed the exam recently. They can further observe and comment on your history taking and exam skills. Lastly, form a group with other doctors who are taking the MRCEM OSCE exam. This way you can further share patients and practice delivering your findings out loud. In addition, this will enable you to pass and get confidence in your examination. Furthermore, make sure that you diagnose thoughtfully and communicate clearly with patients and colleagues.

Manage Time

You will come across a pie chart while reading that explains how marks are broken down at that station. This may be teaching skills, communication skills or clinical knowledge. Furthermore, if a scenario lends you a topic that you are well versed in, it is tempting to showcase all your knowledge. Besides, if it only accounts for 25% of the mark and teaching skills account for a greater percentage, you need to further prioritize your teaching skills.

Read the Room

Make sure that you don’t overlook anything when you walk into the station. Look out further for any equipment or ques from the actor. They are meant to be addressed as part of the examination. Moreover, when people overlook cues and props from hand gel to x-ray machines, they end up losing marks in the assessment.
